Post: Medieval Towns: Siena, Pienza and an Abbey in Between

Siena. Never took the Renaissance style, so it looks like 1300s

We visited Siena today. This town is beloved by Americans who visit it. It once was a full city and a seat of power in Tuscany. Eventually, its rival, Florence, surpassed it. Now a small city of about 50,000, it has wonderful traditions, especially those linked to its neighborhoods, each named after an animal.

We toured the city government building, and the cathedral. On the way to Pienza, we stopped at an abandoned abbey, of St Galgano. It was very beautiful, and difficult to imagine that from its thriving medieval start, it would remain just an empty shell now.

We spend the night in Pienza and visit this medieval towm tomorrow.

This is a brief post because the hotel wifi is not strong.

  1. Queste foto sono bellissime! Grazie mille! Avete visto i manoscritti illuminati nella cattedrale a Siena? Sono meravigliosi!
    Buon viaggio!

  2. These are the most beautiful places in Tuscany! I just looked at some of our photos of Pienza and Siena from our 2022 trip (and a couple of Siena at Christmas in 2019) and was reminded yet again of their beauty. Soak all this in! And eat pici. . .
